Are soaking of onions good idea?

Onions are a stable in the kitchen around the world since they give flavor to many different types of dishes. Their specialty is that it can be enjoyed either raw or cooked. Onions are highly nutritious, they are a good source of several essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, and calcium and have been associated with several benefits including improved heart health, better blood sugar control and increased bone density. Adding more onions to your diet is an easy way to benefit your overall health.
But is soaking the onions a good idea? Let’s find the answer!
Soaking the onions helps dilute their sulfur content which can be off-putting in the taste and odor, by taking away that pungent raw bite and leaving you with a pleasant, milder onion that still have some snap to it.
Cold water will also reduce the amount of onion flavor.
Ice water soak helps keep sliced onion from oxidizing and turning brown.
The cold water will help to draw out natural juices in the onion.
It can also be used to help prolong the shelf life of onions, by allowing them to absorb some of moisture and help reduce spoilage.
Can help prevent cross-contamination when preparing dishes that need to stay separate.
Soaking onions can remove some of the nutrients. (Let us discuss this point a bit below)
· Soaking onions can remove some of the nutrients they contain when onions are soaked, the liquid they absorb can cause water-soluble vitamins and minerals to be leached out of vegetable. This can happen when they are soaked for extended periods of time hence it is generally recommended to soak the onions for 15 mins or so. Then squeeze the excess water before using it.
When you soak onions in water the length of time depends in the size of the onions and what you will be using them for. So, whether is good idea or bad it all depends on the type of dish and the and for how long a person soak them for. To answer the above question, soaking an onion is not a bad idea. You just be careful not to soak them for long time to preserve the essential vitamins and minerals.
